Is Tesla's supercharging network a meaningful advantage for the company?

Tesla's Supercharging Network is one of the first things that come to mind when people think about Tesla's EVs (electric vehicles). Is this a meaningful competitive advantage for Tesla? Is there any risk that having a proprietary charging network actually introduces the risk of being left out from a common charging network?
