What is the relevance of Tesla Energy?

In launching the Tesla Energy division several years ago, Elon has talked about the potential for that business to ultimately rival Tesla's automotive business in scale. However, as of 2019, the Energy business is a fraction of the size of the automotive business. What is the relevance of Tesla Energy?
